Pentecost 32 The Cross, God's Heart For Us

Pentecost 32 The Cross, God's Heart For Us

1500 years before Jesus came, that’s when scholars believe Moses wrote Genesis. Genesis contains the roots of God’s plan to recover mankind. It logs us in to the origin of everything, the universe, mankind’s beginning, the fall of man from God and the seed stories of God’s plan for man’s recovery. One in particular sets the stage for the Cross of Christ, our redemption and salvation through it. It is that heart-moving story of God testing Abraham, Chapter 22. Let’s look at it. After you read the following Scripture and succeeding comments close your eyes, pray that the Spirit who brought Scripture together will make a frame for it in your mind and heart.

“1 Now it came to pass after these things that God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” 2 Then He said, “Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you…..6 So Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife, and the two of them went together…..9 Then they came to the place of which God had told him. And Abraham built an altar there and placed the wood in order; and he bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, upon the wood. 10 And Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. 11 But the Angel of the LORD called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” So he said, “Here I am.” 12 And He said, “Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.” 13 Then Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and there behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son. 14 And Abraham called the name of the place, The-LORD-Will-Provide;[b] as it is said to this day, “In the Mount of the LORD it shall be provided. (NKJV)””

This is a foreshadowing (a scene that will repeat its intention) of Jesus on the Cross, the perfect sacrifice for sin.

God is revealing Himself here through Abraham. Abraham has already been designated as the father who would sire generations more numerous than the stars (15:5) and be blessing to all people (12:3). God is returning to the world the idea of One God who is a personal Father to all men. Not only a Father but also a Father who has an only Son.

God is also revealing something else here. The son, Isaac, is unhesitatingly obedient. Isaac trusts his father Abraham which will later be seen in Jesus trusting His Heavenly Father completely. Imagine the three-day trip to the mountain without a lamb. What was Isaac thinking on the way? And as he was being stretched out on the altar of wood? And watched as his father raised the knife over him? Scripture doesn’t say. What we do see is that he was obedient, submitted to his father, trusting him completely.

One very significant verse that seals the connection between this story and the crucifixion is 22:6. Isaac carried the wood on the three-day journey. Jesus was obedient, submitted to His Father, trusting Him completely. He carried the Cross, submitted to its shame and was crucified to death upon it, ‘a perfect, holy and sufficient sacrifice’ for all mankind for all time.

God commends Abraham for his faith in Him and again promises to make the number of Abraham’s descendents more numerous than the stars and the sands of the sea. But even more important is the idea of sacrifice. While He set the stage He wouldn’t let Abraham enact the sacrifice because only one sacrifice could possibly make a difference for all those promised descendants. That would be the Cross of Christ. No kind of human sacrifice, no human being and no father after Adam, no matter how faithful, could possibly atone for man’s sin. The point of the whole sacrificial system God ordained under Moses was to prepare man’s mind for the ultimate personal sacrifice God Himself would undertake as atonement. God Himself would send His One and only perfect Son. This story sets the scenario for what He will do later In Jesus.

If, after you have prayed, other insights are given you, please, please, share them with all of us that we too might grow in our faith in Him. Add them in the comment section below. God bless.
