Christmas and the One-Track Mind

The Lord Jesus had one attitude which He described in these words, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength and your neighbor as yourself (Mt.22, Lk.10).” As we said in the last blog, He was a one attitude person while we, on the other hand, tend to be multi-attitudinal. That is, we develop attitudes as we perceive different people, different situations, momentary diversions, causing us to rely on past conditioning to meet them. Each one, being an unknown factor, makes us reliant on a past devised relational strategy, attitude, mindset, to deal with them. Jesus had a one-track mind, serving the will of His Father. Everything He said and did was sifted through the love for His Father.

Again, if you are a believer, you train yourself to react and become Jesus conscious in each new moment. It is the Holy Spirit who delivers that inspiration in the moment. But it’s not a ‘what-would-Jesus-do?’ moment. It is far more Jesus centered than that. It’s a ‘faith-in-Jesus’ moment. It’s what you learned about Jesus from Holy Scripture each day before you ever got to that moment. The Scripture is what sets you up for that moment. When Paul said that we need to be transformed by the renewal of our minds (Rom.12:2), he was letting us know that God’s Word is what conditions our mind for any moment. And it’s not how much you remember its specific words but that you read it to learn more about Jesus and react in faith in any given moment.

It is that personal Scriptural storehouse in us the Holy Spirit draws on, to make each moment a Jesus moment. Sometimes the words come out as they were written. Other times it is the concept or principle they carry that we share in our own words or in the way we use them to express ourselves honestly. The Lord Jesus was a man of His Word. In fact, He was the Word in the flesh (John 1). The Lord Jesus had a ‘one-track’ mind. He thought spiritually through the Word.

If you want examples of the ‘one-track-mind’ in action, just talk to missionaries in foreign lands. They are the product of a singular calling to take their lives and place them at the Lord’s disposal in a place in where they bring a message contrary to the prevalent cultural atmosphere. Missionaries are a different breed. They come with serving Jesus in mind. This puts them in a totally dependent social and spiritual reliance on the Lord. Isn’t this how the Lord entered the world, a missionary with one purpose, to bring the reality of a spiritual personal loving God into a totally self-centered world? That’s the message that shapes our attitude and action.

So, Christmas is not a one event spiritual mystery we celebrate with presents and feast because it’s history. It is the birth of The Missionary who was a visionary telling us it’s not necessary that our lives should end in a cemetery, but to love away the sin and hate that is the world’s way to play and then live forever with the Lord. Christmas is an every day experience of the birth of Jesus in our hearts. So, like the gift of Jesus’ perception, we have the gift of His one-track mind dressed in a one attitude heart through which the Holy Spirit guided Him.

You can check everything He teaches, the actions He takes, with Scripture and what do we find for the mind? Think of the centurion at the Cross who said “Truly, this was [and is] the Son of God!”
