Discipleship---Introduction

Romans 12:1-2

"Therefore, I urge (beseech) you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will."

This is what transformation is all about. Trans-across, formation-reforming what has been malformed (Gen.3). We are crossing over into the spiritual realm, spiritual environment, spiritual dimension.

Why? 100% of everything from our identity, our lifestyle, our mindset, our motivation and action is invisible. Life is all about processing the invisible to handle the visible. 2Cor.5:7 “We walk by faith not by sight.”

We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience.

Having our minds reshaped spiritually, restoring the image of God in us, seeing everything in a spiritual context, processing life spiritually. Genesis 1:26 The image of God.

Luke 24:13-35 Discipleship---Process of Transformation---

Jesus’ Goal---to believe spiritually in mind, to trust Him with your heart and to have faith in your spirit. The basic command Lk.10:27, Love completely.

A Disciple’s Foundation

First, Gen.1:26 Our beginning.
God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness…”
Therefore, we are not human beings having a spiritual experience; we are spiritual beings having a human experience.

Second, Genesis 3—Our problem.
The devil’s 4-Fold Plan of Separation (vs.1-7)
1.Doubt God’s Word 2.Doubt God 3.Think and act apart from God 4.Get someone else involved. This is how we lost our spiritual connection to God, our personal identity and our connection to one another and where sin entered in place of God’s Spirit.

Third, Gen.3:14-15---Our solution.
God counters the devil. “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head and you will strike his heel.” This is the first prophecy wherein God will send His Son.

Fourth, Gen.6:5---Our condition.
“The Lord saw how great man’s wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time.”

Fifth, Ps.14:2-3---Our individuality.
“The Lord looks down from Heaven on the sons of men to see if there are any who understand, any who seek God. All have turned aside, they have together become corrupt; there is no one who does good, not even one.”

Sixth, John 3:3---Our need.
“I tell you the truth, no one can enter the Kingdom of God unless he is born again.” This is spiritual rebirth. Just as Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit and became man so as sinners we need to be conceived spiritually in order to be restored to God and one another. As Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world (John 18:36).”

Seventh, John 3:16---Our answer.
“For God so loved the world that He gave His One and Only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.” Jesus’ death on the Cross was the perfect sacrifice for the spiritual imperfection of sin that separated man from God and one another.

Eighth, John 14:26---Our Counselor.
“But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” He is the Spirit of Jesus.

Ninth, 2Timothy 3:16---Our Guide.
“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” It is the Scripture through which the Holy Spirit works.

Tenth, Ephesians 2:10---Our Purpose
“For we are God’s workmanship created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” True ‘good works’ are faith inspired. “Everything that does not come from faith is sin (Rom.14:23).”

Eleventh, Eph.1:17---Our Enlightenment
“I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know Him better.”

Twelfth, 1Cor.12:12-13---Our Family
“The Body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all of its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ. For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body---whether Jews or Greeks, slave or fee---and we were all given the One Spirit to drink.“ “Now you are the Body of Christ, and each one of your is a part of it (1Cor.12:27).”

Thirteenth, 1Cor.12:7---Our Function
“Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.” Each are given spiritual gifts for ministry to one another in the spiritual family. They are the extension of our spiritual identity in the family.

Fourteenth, Matt.28:18-20---Our Mission
“Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Fifteenth, Our Lifestyle

The Apostle’s teaching (Scripture, witness and testimony), fellowship (1John1:3), breaking bread (Luke 22:13-21, 1Cor.11:23-26) and prayer (John 17, Matt.6:9).
