Pentecost 17 More on Why Gifts Are Given

Eph.4 “It was He who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers.”
1Cor.12 “For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues.
Ro.12 If a man's gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.

Much has been written about spiritual gifts; what they are, who has them, how many there are and how they are to be used. The problem is you don’t hear much preached or taught about them in the average church. Yet they could make a difference in how a congregation sees itself in relationship to God, the members in relationship to each other and between a congregation and the world. If the local congregation is really aware of itself as part of the Body of Christ then its mission is making Jesus known as Savior and Lord, making disciples for Him and being His agents to transform that part of the world in which the congregation exists. The gifts working in concert accomplish those goals.

From the biblical passages above several things stand out.
First, gifts are given. They pour from God’s heart to free, cleanse and grow our hearts.
Second, no one is given all the gifts. God intends them to develop personal growth through relational interdependence so that each one learns to depend on other brothers and sisters in the Body. We go from lost independency in the world to found dependency on a relationship with God to interdependency in the Body to be individual lights of God back in the dark world.
Third, gifts discovery and practice are to be encouraged, sought after and those gifted make themselves constantly available in the Body.
Fourth, they are to be studied in a way that an individual brings his natural talents to serve through the gift.
Fifth, they are always to be offered with love and given in the context of personal faith.
Sixth, they are to be buffered with generosity, diligence and cheer.
Seventh, gifts are given to practice humility before God and one another. They are what enable us to build spiritual relationships, which, ultimately, are the only really true relationships and the ones we carry into eternity…….. ><>stay tuned.
