Pentecost 71 The Grand Design
Recently, when I was concerned about a certain massive bill that was being introduced to Congress, I immediately asked who wrote the bill, by whose authority was it written, who was supervising its production, who was reviewing it as it was being written, who would be responsible for its ongoing supervision and what would be the long term outcome, the result, not only for the country but for each individual in the country?
The operative word in these questions here is ‘who.’ Ultimately, what determines the shape, the scope and the purpose is the mind and heart of the person and/or persons involved in the production. What are their background influences, biases, agendas, philosophies and present motivations? These are reasonable and important questions especially in light of the fact that only 545 people are the final judges of the policies that govern in excess of 320,000,000 people. Just like us, each of these 545 people has a personal history, a way of looking at life and motivations behind what they think, feel and do.
My purpose here is to place all of our present concerns in spiritual perspective because it’s our spiritual perspective that motivates us. Beyond the present, beyond the past and beyond the future who is behind everything, who is in charge and supervising existence, who is constantly reviewing its movement, whose mind was involved in putting everything together and why? What are the long-term benefits and the ultimate goals for humanity as a whole and each individual within the human community?
Here is a great perspective passage,
“God rescued us from dead-end alleys and dark dungeons. He's set us up in the kingdom of the Son he loves so much, the Son who got us out of the pit we were in, got rid of the sins we were doomed to keep repeating.
We look at this Son and see the God who cannot be seen. We look at this Son and see God's original purpose in everything created. For everything, absolutely everything, above and below, visible and invisible, rank after rank after rank of angels—everything got started in him and finds its purpose in him. He was there before any of it came into existence and holds it all together right up to this moment. And when it comes to the church, he organizes and holds it together, like a head does a body.
He was supreme in the beginning and—leading the resurrection parade—he is supreme in the end. From beginning to end he's there, towering far above everything, everyone. So spacious is he, so roomy, that everything of God finds its proper place in him without crowding. Not only that, but all the broken and dislocated pieces of the universe—people and things, animals and atoms—get properly fixed and fit together in vibrant harmonies, all because of his death, his blood that poured down from the cross (Colossians 1:13-20 The Message Bible).”
Then, of course, that great purpose passage, “This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life. God didn't go to all the trouble of sending his Son merely to point an accusing finger, telling the world how bad it was. He came to help, to put the world right again (Jn.3:16 The Message).”
Spiritual perspective? Only God can love people and only people can love other people. Motivation, supervision, detail and purpose can only be understood in the context of God’s love and grace as revealed in Jesus before whom everything was a mystery until He came. “The mystery in a nutshell is just this: Christ is in you, so therefore you can look forward to sharing in God's glory. It's that simple. That is the substance of our Message. We preach Christ, warning people not to add to the Message. We teach in a spirit of profound common sense so that we can bring each person to maturity. To be mature is to be basic. Christ! No more, no less. That's what I'm working so hard at day after day, year after year, doing my best with the energy God so generously gives me (Col.1:24-26 The Message).” The shape, the scope and the purpose of all things can only be understood in Him. That’s the Grand Design!
