There are some people who, as a result of their faith in Jesus, have the spiritual gift of encouragement also called exhortation. Jesus encouraged and exhorted His disciples. His teachings are both encouraging and exhorting. Barnabas was an encourager of Paul.

If there is anything that we undertake, we need, we want to launch out into, there is always that nagging reluctance to risk, to take a chance, to wonder if we are able. That is where the gift of encouragement comes in. People can sense when others need to be supported in their plans. How many times haven’t we been given an idea but never followed through on it? We might have awakened in the middle of the night and our minds built a whole structure for an idea but it died as we went back to sleep and never pursued it again.

People who are encouragers hear an idea; can sense the reluctance and even the fear of starting to bring the idea to fruition. This is when they step in and say, ‘You can do it’, ‘I’m with you in it and I’ll stand beside you and help if I can.” They do it not only once but keep on because they sense it is an idea consistent with the Word of God, that it should be done and the person who conceived the idea exhorted (urged) to go ahead with it.

Three things are required for this gift to operate.

First, it needs to be recognized. Awareness of the gift as a gift needs everyone’s attention. No gift is grasped as such until there is someone or something that gets us to recognize its presence in us.

Second, it needs to be prayed about. When you sense a gift is present pray and ask others to pray with you about it.

Third, it needs to be practiced. Step in when a person is in need asking the Lord to let the Holy Spirit guide your perception and action.

Remember, the result of the gift of encouragement (exhortation) is helping strengthen the faith in the persons being urged and encouraged to carry through what the Spirit has awakened in them. And, don’t we all need it.

Paul describes what a gift bearer is like, “9 Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. 11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. 12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. 13 Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality. 14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. 16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not think you are superior (Romans 12:9-16).”

Note that love, honor, zeal, fervor, joy, blessing are qualities that are part of the gift of encouragement. While these are common to our corporate witness the sense of encouragement can be felt within in a special way. Those who have this special gift have to step forward. Encouragers, we need you. God bless.
