Thus begins an old Gospel song.
In the late 1800’s there was yellow fever epidemic in north Florida. The railroad was a key element in dropping food and medicine to help those afflicted with the disease. The train didn’t stop. It was always moving in order to get needed supplies along its path. This was a piece of history, an actual event, something happening in this world that could be seen and experienced.
Like all events that can be recorded disciples of Jesus are called to see them as something more. They are called to see the spiritual reality behind an event. What does any event mean, what can we learn from it and how is it to be read spiritually? At the time, those involved in the epidemic were simply trying to help and to survive. But there is a message, a positive spiritual message, to be grasped. It has three parts, the situation, the spiritual meaning and our response.
The situation was critical, a diseased environment was killing people. Something had to be done. Food and other supplies were needed. The train was available.
Spiritually understood we live in a fallen diseased environment of sin within and evil without. There is nothing anyone within it can do. It needs someone to come from without to correct the situation, bring spiritual food and supplies and save those trapped in it.
Our response is to see ourselves on God’s train, a train that goes from generation to generation delivering the same message, the same help and bringing the same supplies.
Again, the world in which we live is diseased by sin and people are dying. The Lord established a train called the Body of Christ, a train carrying the love of God, the message of a Savior Jesus, God the Son and the provision of the Holy Spirit to supply the heart and soul needs of every infected individual found along the tracks which are the paths each of us take as we make our way each day.
The Father designed the train. Its engineer is the Lord Jesus and it’s power, the Holy Spirit. Its provisions are the grace, love and faith of God. The crew is equipped with spiritual gifts to help restore those who come on board. Wherever it goes in the world it moves across the great landscape of time and gathers the distressed, obsessed and possessed with a guarantee of life that never ends.
Its stops are the hearts of every person. No one is passed by. It beckons all to come on board. There is no charge to be a passenger. The fare was paid for by the blood of the engineer who sacrificed His life to drive the train. Those who accept Him become new cars connected to each other and go with Him to His destination, the Kingdom of Heaven. It has water stops to baptize those who choose to ride and then, in turn, stand on its steps offering a hand to those perishing in the diseased climate of the world. It has a central dining car called worship where the Lord’s Supper awaits those who have recognized and received the engineer’s personal touch and invitation.
Johnny Cash sang a song about being in a prison. It resonates with the theme every heart feels. “I hear that train acomin’, it’s comin’ round the bend, I ain’t seen the sunshine since I don’t know when, I’m stuck in Folsom prison, I know I can’t be free but that train keeps on comin’ that’s what bothers me. If they freed me from this prison and this railroad train was mine, I know I’d move it on a little farther down the line, far from Folsom prison, that’s where I want to be… and that train keeps a movin’…”
Folks, we are that train, the Body of Christ, ‘rollin’ down the line’ and lots of ‘you and me’s’ are out there waiting in prisons to be set free. “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free (Gal.5:1).” Our response? Think spiritually, diagnose spiritually, choose spiritually and act spiritually ‘as we move on down the line.’
