Pentecost 35 The Flavor to Savor When the Light is Right

"Let me tell you why you are here. You're here to be salt-seasoning that brings out the God-flavors of this earth. If you lose your saltiness, how will people taste godliness? You've lost your usefulness and will end up in the garbage (Matt.5:13 The Message Bible).”

Last time we talked about Jesus telling us we are the light of the world. This time we are told we are the salt of the earth. God is not asking us to do something beyond our ability. What He asks us to do He will empower. It’s all about availability. To put it simply, just make yourself available and He will send His Spirit to help you discern, assess and act.

When you walk in the kitchen in the morning to have breakfast probably the first thing you do is to turn on the light. It puts everything in focus. You can see what you’re doing, what’s available and then prepare the food. You go from sleep to awake to movement. You go from dark to light to assessment to action.

Transfer that process to living in the dark world, in godless society. In order to really see what is going on you have to turn on the light. You assess what you see. Your focus is the “Light of the world, Jesus,” and then you respond. Likewise, you may see a situation with a need. Again you turn on the “Light,” assess, plan, and a ministry or mission may emerge as a response. Or you may find yourself in an opportunity while you are on the way somewhere and a personal response is required. You are on the spot. No time to assess or plan. You have to react. You trust that the “Light” is present to guide in the process. You can add your own circumstances here of course but the point is we are always on the way from night to day, from darkness to light.

If we look at Jesus we see the Light but we also see what salt is all about. He is the One who flavors the world and makes it tasty. Salt and Light are complimentary. Salt is what you do and light is what is seen. That is, salt brings the flavor of God’s presence into action and light is when others say, “Oh, I see why you did that.” They see God as the flavorer and the reason for the flavor. Salt is the deed and light is the reason for the deed. As His disciples we receive His ‘flavor’ (the Holy Spirit) and the focus (to please Him) of His light to spread the flavor wherever we are. Motivation for a disciple of Jesus is to please Him. He gives us His Holy Spirit to energize the mind and the heart. He gets us to think the way Jesus thinks and to act the way Jesus acted.

Eph.2:8 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9not by works, so that no one can boast. 10For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Stay tuned………
