Pentecost 7 God’s Will---Restoring the Heart

Ezek.36:24-28 'For I will take you out of the nations; I will gather you from all the countries and bring you back into your own land. 25 I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols. 26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws. 28 You will live in the land I gave your forefathers; you will be my people, and I will be your God.

If there is any one passage in Scripture that reveals the spiritual landscape of God’s will for each of us it has to be this one. The word ‘will’ is used 11 times. It specifically states God’s will, God’s plan and God’s method. First, He will personally bring humanity into the land He has prepared for them. Second, He will personally cleanse them from idolatry. Third, He will personally give them a new heart for Him and for others. This will all be done spiritually.

The core dynamic of His plan is the restoration of the heart. He will give us a new heart. This is exactly why Jesus came. God would come to restore each heart personally to Himself through a relationship with Jesus. But that heart would be a spiritually born heart, a heart that would be guided by a ‘new’ spirit, the Holy Spirit. Jesus would be the example of that restoration. He would be born spiritually in the flesh by the Holy Spirit, live and die faithfully in the Spirit and be raised by the Spirit. That is how we are called each day---to be aware of our being born spiritually, to crucify our self-centered nature, to let the Holy Spirit raise us and guide us each day through His Word.

The steps in this restoration process call for us to be taken out of our cultural conditioning (nations and countries), gathered into a spiritual family (your own land), baptized (by water), cleansed (from sin and its strongholds) and given a Holy Spirit guided heart.

God’s promise is spelled out even further in Ezekiel’s account in ch.37 of being brought by the Spirit into the valley of the dry bones. God speaks to him and asks, “"Son of man, can these bones live?" I said, "O Sovereign LORD, you alone know." 4 Then he said to me, "Prophesy to these bones and say to them, 'Dry bones, hear the word of the LORD! 5 This is what the Sovereign LORD says to these bones: I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life. 6 I will attach tendons to you and make flesh come upon you and cover you with skin; I will put breath in you, and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the LORD.' "

The specifics next---stay tuned.
