Spiritual Gifts 3, Leadership

(Couldn't resist doing one more gift before we left.)

We are still in Romans 12:6-8. As we have said gifts are given by the Holy Spirit to build the Body. Four avenues open the recognition of one’s gifts, prayer, study, small group and confirmation.

First, if we have prayed to know what gifts we have, that in itself is a calling by the Spirit to evaluate not only what we are doing but where we need to put our energy for the Body. Too many of us wait to be asked to do… Continue

Spiritual Gifts 2 Service

Continuing our series on spiritual gifts we look at the gift of service. But, and I say 'but,' remember the gifts are given by the Holy Spirit as the Lord wills. Three things to keep before us as we talk about the gifts. First, they are spiritual. Second, they are tailored by the Spirit to fit each of us uniquely. Third, they always lie in wait for every next moment as the Spirit leads. What we are saying is this: belief, trust and faith enable the gifts to operate. It is as though they are… Continue

Spiritual Gifts,The Way a Church Grows Spiritually

This will be the first in a series centering on spiritual gifts. It will by no means go into detail in the sense that you will know exactly what to do and how to do it.  The first thing we need to remember about spiritual gifts is that they are given by the Holy Spirit who gives them as He determines and empowers them.  Second these gifts are given to build the Body of Christ both in character and numbers.  Third, the Holy Spirit tailors the gifts to fit the individual so each individual…

The Divided Self---a quote from John Stott

John Stott has been a biblical voice for decades. His biblical approach has influenced thousands.  Understanding our human nature is the first step in becoming a productive people who allow the Creator to recover and restore us to His original purposes. John sees us as selves divided within.

                                                                   The divided self

What we are (our self or personal identity) is partly the result of the Creation (the image of God), and… Continue

This Train 'isa' Bound for Glory, This Train...

Thus begins an old Gospel song.

In the late 1800’s there was yellow fever epidemic in north Florida. The railroad was a key element in dropping food and medicine to help those afflicted with the disease. The train didn’t stop. It was always moving in order to get needed supplies along its path. This was a piece of history, an actual event, something happening in this world that could be seen and experienced.

Like all events that can be recorded disciples of Jesus are called to… Continue

The Heart of Discipleship

This was requested as a repeat to consider what it means to make disciples as Jesus called us to do

The Heart of Discipleship

The human plight is that it is a flight into a night filled with fright that makes us up-tight with no light, shortened height, limited might, lack of sight, no clear right,

Where sin is in, and the devil’s spin and his evil grin makes everything thin and there is no place to pin who you are in his noisy din,

Here we are in the… Continue

Every Next Moment Counts

What are doing this minute? Where are you? Can you translate your activity and place spiritually? Can you interpret your circumstance from a spiritual perspective?

Thinking spiritually is the meat and potatoes of being a disciple of Jesus in a world of super market values. If you look out into space and think spiritually you will find that space is just a copy of something much larger, more real and infinitely personal. Just the pattern inherent in the physical universe is simply an… Continue

God and Us, Each of Us Together

Just how personal is God? One has only to look at the Psalms. But one of those Psalms is especially pointed, Psalm 139 which will appear at the end of this writing that will hopefully move you to mine its gems. To give us a start consider John Stott’s overview:

“Psalm 139 is arguably the most radical statement in the Old Testament of God's personal relationship to the individual. Personal pronouns and possessives occur in the first person (I, me, my) forty-six times and in the second… Continue

Outline for Spiritual Gifts Gathering

Outline as requested.

God’s Plan---God’s Structure---God’s Way

Father Son Holy Spirit

Architect Contractor Labor Force

Mind Heart Spirit

Just as God is the Father and God is the Son, He is also God the Spirit so they are Three in One. The Trinity is a spiritual combine so to speak, One God, Three Persons, Three in One, One in Three.

The importance of this statement comes right smack at us personally when we read Genesis 1:26, “Then God said,… Continue

The World Eats Us Alive---If We Let It

I’ve just finished reading articles on the Middle East crisis, the economic cauldron, the health care bill and the border wars plus another athlete on drugs. Of course TV exposes us to the boiling pot of Islamic pressure, political unrest in Africa, South America and Asia. On the home front a divided Congress, a polarized society and social institutions cracking at their foundation. That’s the outside world. What about our internal world? Do we have personal and interpersonal issues like family… Continue

Real Life, I Mean REALLY Real Life

What Genesis records is so basic that often we overlook its implications. What are human beings really looking for? What is their quest for the mind, heart and spirit all about? Thinking spiritually is a beginning as opposed to how we are all caught up in politics, economics and just plain physical survival. Flow with the sequence in the following passages and consider where the secular world really is. Now shift into the promise of a totally different experience when we see things the way God… Continue
