Pentecost 6 Moving On in the Holy Spirit
When you have your spiritual bearings, that is, your spiritual consciousness, your spiritual connection and you are open to the Spirit’s conditioning; it’s time to be on the move. Consider these three things again. First, you realize you are living in a spiritual dimension that governs the physical dimension. You begin reading everything from a spiritual perspective. There is a whole spiritual reality behind everything you see. Second, you…

Gems of Jesus Matt.20:27-28
(With thanks to Johnny Johnson in Bellingham, Washington for sending the little vignette that follows the verses.)
27…and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— 28just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."
One day, a man went to visit a church, He got there early, parked his car and got out. Another car pulled up near the driver got out and said, " I always park there!…

Pentecost 5 John 15:1-11 Getting Our Spiritual Bearings
1"I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes[a] so that it will be even more fruitful. 3You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. 4Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. 5"I am the…

Pentecost 4 The One Sufficient Spirit
Before Pentecost the world simply accepted a variety of gods, religions and the multiplicity of all kinds of spirits. Guesswork at best, philosophers searching and a general resignation to whatever seemed to satisfy the moment.
But with Pentecost came the revelation, recognition and realization of the Holy Spirit as the singular Spirit of the One God. First, the revelation that God is a Father, second, the recognition that the Son is…

Pentecost 3 The Event Acts 2:1-4
1 The day of Pentecost came. The believers all gathered in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound came from heaven. It was like a strong wind blowing. It filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw something that looked like tongues of fire. The flames separated and settled on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit. They began to speak in languages they had not known before. The Spirit gave them the ability to do…

Pentecost 2 The Fire Within
A boy is on the field playing soccer. He has been at a lot of practices, learned many skills and now he is in the game. It’s up to him to put all he has learned on the field. His father, in the background, worked with the coach, taking him through many routines. He helped to sharpen his strengths and work on his weaknesses. He patted him on the back before each game and was always on the sidelines encouraging him. The game progresses and fatigue sets in but…

Pentecost 1 The Promised Gift
We have been delving into the Resurrection of Jesus. It has been a journey of prayer, reason, logic, spirit and meditation. Mining the Scripture through personal pondering, the gemstones emerge with bright shafts of light from the Light that lights the world. From birth to the Cross and the Resurrection Jesus made Himself known in the world of sight, hearing, touch, taste and feeling. Jesus was and is the glory of God for the world to see. God in Christ…

"The work of God for you is this: to believe in the One He has sent." John 6:29
Faith in Jesus is the work to which we are all called. Labor is what we do to support our work. As we trust the presence of Jesus and His Word in relationship to others during the course of any day, we are working. Regardless of what job (labor) we have our earnings support our work, our real work. ---A kind of thought for the day.---

Easter 22 Putting The Pieces Together--- Luke 24
One thing stands out about the Resurrection appearances. They are like pieces in a puzzle. When put together they make a picture. Here at the end of Luke’s Gospel we see that very thing through the eyes of two disciples completing and revealing the picture.
The Resurrection experience will take time to absorb. For the everyday man and woman absorbed in the world’s routine Resurrection is beyond their comprehension,…

Easter 21 Resurrection and Something About to Happen John 21
All the Resurrection appearances have a message of expectation because of the fact Jesus rose from the dead. Each appearance carries a unique theme as we have seen. The same is true for this third appearance to the disciples encompassing the whole of Chapter 21. Its uniqueness is that it brings together the intent behind all John has written about Jesus, “Therefore go and make disciples.” It is in essence a “therefore”…

Easter 19 Resurrection, Doubt, Seeing and Not Seeing (Jn.20:24-31)
This passage is famous having made popular the epithet, ‘Doubting Thomas.’ Right or not Thomas has become the historical poster child for doubt. Perhaps we need to rethink the cultural image and see him in Scriptural reality.
Thomas was not with the disciples during the second appearance so they told him they had seen…

Easter 20 Resurrection and John 20:30-31
Before we launch into the next Resurrection appearance we need to put an exclamation point on the closing words of Chapter 20, “Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name.”
This passage does five things.
First, it keeps…

Easter 18 Resurrection Appearances 3
So far we have seen the external evidence of the risen Jesus in terms of the empty tomb and the undisturbed grave clothes. Next was His appearance to Mary Magadalene and her personal heart recognition. In this third segment is His appearance to a group, His disciples (John 20:19-23). We need to assess this appearance closely because it speaks directly to the spiritual condition of the disciples and ours. Let’s take it verse by…

Easter 17 Sharing the Resurrection With Others---Some Starting Points
The Resurrection of Jesus rolled away the stone of fear from the tomb of uncertainty surrounding the invisible spiritual dimension. The Resurrection of Jesus removes the linen strips of speculation, philosophy, mythology, idolatry, agnosticism, atheism, complacency, denial and institutional religion that have immobilized the mind and heart. The Resurrection has brought truth, faith, hope, joy and love back to the…

Easter 16 Jesus’ Appearance to Mary Magdalene
John 20:10-18. Apparently Peter and the other disciple left Mary without sharing their experience of the grave clothes with her. She remains at the tomb crying then goes in and sees two angels sitting where Jesus’ body had lain. They ask her why she’s crying. She recounts her belief to them that someone took Jesus’ body. But then an amazing thing happened that rearranged the lifetime conditioning of her conscious humanity. She turned from…

Easter 15 The Start of the Resurrection Appearances
In John 20 the first appearance of the resurrected Jesus after His death is introduced by His disappearance (vs.1-8). Mary Magdalene goes to the tomb only to find it empty. She assumes that someone has stolen the body. She runs to tell Peter who in turn runs to the tomb with the other disciple whom Jesus loved. They entered the tomb. What they saw jarred them. Jesus’ grave clothes were still there. The linen strips intertwined with…

Easter 14 Resurrection and Prophetic Hope Fulfilled
Jeremiah 29:11-14
11 For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. 12 Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. 14 I will be found by you," declares the LORD, "and will bring you back from captivity. I will gather you from all the…

Easter 13 The Resurrection, Hope and Jesus’ Prayer
As we have said before prayer is hope in practice. So just how did Jesus pray? While we could look at The Lord’s Prayer as Jesus teaching us how and what to pray for, the not so often quoted longer prayer in John 17 exhibits hope from a different angle. Here is a prayer that captures God the Son hoping and praying for His people. It is really a three-fold prayer encompassing His prayer for Himself, His disciples and all future…

Easter 12 Resurrection, Hope and Prayer
The Resurrection brings hope. If the practice of hope is prayer, consider five hoping points that allow the current of God’s will to flow---Praise, Thanksgiving, Confession, Asking and Meditation.
Praise
Ps.22:3
Praise does three things: centers me, lifts me and sustains me. It centers my mind on God as Father, lifts my heart to His Son Jesus as a daily Savior and sustains me by His Spirit.
First, praise centers…
