Lent 8 Mourning to Morning, Faith

Lent 8 Mourning to Morning, Faith

Mt.5:4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

There are three kinds of mourning, grief, remorse, and suffering due to circumstance. The first is the natural grief occurring when someone close to us dies, is suffering physically or goes through hardships or broken relationships. The second is the guilt that stabs the heart, like regret, sorrow for thought and behavior. The third is unjust suffering, the innocent bystander… Continue

Gems of Jesus and Lent 7

Gems of Jesus

Matt.5:3 Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven

There is no question that Jesus wants to completely reorient mankind’s mind and heart to process everything spiritually; who they are, why they are here and how they behave. His first teachings, the Beatitudes, are all spiritually rooted. Again remember, Jesus was conceived by the Spirit, is led by the Spirit and lives ‘…by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God (Mt.4:4).’… Continue

Gems of Jesus

Jesus said, "Remember Lot's wife."

This challenging statement from Jesus gets us to the always present moment when a decision has to be made. Lot and his family were told by God to leave Sodom and Gomorra and when they left not to look back. Mrs. Lot looked back while she was on the way and turned into a pillar of salt as a result. Why did she look back? Memories, nostalgia, the good old days, fear of something new, the road ahead in the unknown?

Daily life is always encapsulated in… Continue

Lent 6 Flatlands and Mountains, the third Temptation

Lent 6 Flatlands to Mountains, the Third Temptation

As I write this I am sitting in the midst of a mountain range and the Scripture comes to mind, “I will lift mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help? My help cometh from the Lord who hath made Heaven and earth.”

The third temptation finds Jesus being taken up on an ”exceedingly high mountain.” The devil’s subtle technique is to make us think that we can be on top of the world if we can find the highest place,… Continue

Gems of Jesus

Every so often Scriptures come to us that seem to fit where we are personally. Maybe the Holy Spirit is personally revealing something to us that we need for that day or moment. I call these 'Gems from Jesus.' Actually Lance seemed to think that would be a great addition to our site. To start this off one popped into my mind as I was reading (John 9:5)...I am the light of the world. Ponder that for a minute. Light shines in the darkness and reveals what's there. Apply that to spiritual… Continue

Lent 5 Looking Down, Looking Up

Remember again the first temptation in the Garden of Eden? Doubt God's Word. It happens here in the second temptation as well, Matt.4:5-7. You can almost hear the devil thinking, 'So Jesus chose to live in the flesh alone and subject to the world's lures, hmmm, so He won't give into hunger? Human beings like to be in control. They want physical and material security. Well I'll get him another way. If I can't get Him to prove Himself with hunger, I'll get Him to get His whole body involved. I'll… Continue

Lent 4 Temptation 1

Lent 4 Temptation 1

To really get a handle on the temptations of Jesus we have to consider the context. Jesus has submitted to His Father’s will to live in a human body. He is God the Son, a spiritual being having a human experience just like us. Unlike us Jesus never sinned. The Holy Spirit conceived him. We, however, were born in sin. As David observed, “Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me (Ps.51:5).”

This means to get our bearings… Continue

Lent 3 Temptations

Lent 3 Temptation

Matt.4:1 “Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil.” Here begins the single most important process in the history of human experience. It is the process God gave man to discover who he is, why is here and where he is headed. Given by God, it is a spiritual process that takes place within. It is an invisible spiritual process that defines us by our visible behavior. Through it we know God, we know ourselves and we know each other. It… Continue

Lent 2 Baptism

How Jesus Began His Ministry

Lent 2 Baptism

Our spiritual life in Jesus began when we asked Him to be the One who controls our hearts. When Jesus was baptized, He didn’t do it to get rid of sin because He was sinless. What He did was to model what our response should be when we accept Him. Being right with God begins with accepting Jesus and then being baptized as a sign of obedience to Him (Jn.3:5) then living a lifestyle of the Cross, faith in Jesus and its place in us. Jesus’… Continue

Lent 1 Why Was Jesus Baptized?

Why Was Jesus Baptized?

As we start Lent we need to remember Jesus was baptized before He went into the wilderness. Why should He be baptized? Here is the picture of perfect humanity in the flesh. He began perfectly because He was conceived perfectly by the Holy Spirit of God in His mother Mary. When John the Baptist tries to back off baptizing Jesus because he didn’t feel worthy enough, Jesus responded, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness… Continue

Why Jesus? Part 7

Why Jesus? Part 7

The latest buzz in the money world is the three financial whizzes that bilked investors out of billions. Many of the so-called socially elite lost their fortunes and are hocking their possessions to survive. Not only that but one of them preyed on his own religious community and at this point seems remorseless. The issue is trust and the need to justify what you trust. He chose to trust a ‘ponzi’ system that doesn’t work and garnered others to trust him because he… Continue

Why Jesus? Part 6

Why Jesus? Part 6

The need to be right is like that itch on your back that you try to reach but never quite make it. So you rub up against the side of a door or, if there is someone close by, you ask them to scratch. Those two are temporary fixes. But there is always another itch in another place at another time. Even as this is being written the concern remains, will it convey the right thoughts, the thoughts that best communicate the truth, the right words, the right structure and… Continue

Why Jesus Part 5

Why Jesus? Part 5

In the first four segments of this series we have put our human condition under a spiritual microscope. We have seen that we operate in two dimensions, the seen and the unseen. In that two-dimensional existence, one overtly obvious conclusion stands out. Each of us is alone, isolated in a visible body, driven by needs that are invisible. We share that condition with every human being on earth, every human being that has ever lived and ever will live.

In… Continue

Prayer for this day especially

Prayer for this day.

Heavenly Father, this day has started with rain and wind. What seems gloomy and threatening, where we anticipate that nothing good lies ahead, when the clouds seems endless, the sun hides and we are limited to the confines of walls and roofs,---penetrate our hearts. Help us to remember that rain is temporary and serves your purposes. Rain softens the soil, brings moisture to sprouting seeds that we may be fed, fills the lakes and the rivers bringing beauty and… Continue

Prayer for today

Heavenly Father there is a calling from your people for strength to make this day your day. So much is happening around us that seems to engulf us. In our time we are inundated by constant media bombardment that keeps our hearts restless. They aggravate the inner fears and uncertainties that seem to linger like early morning mists. Help us to see your Son above those mists and know that they fade in the light and warmth of the Son. We groan within at the temporary things that parade as the… Continue

Why Jesus? Part 4

Why Jesus? Part 4

For many people waking up in the morning is greeted by incessant calls from within…You need to look younger, reflects the mirror… You need to have what they have, says my coveting the larger house in the nicer neighborhood I happen to pass by, you need more money, shouts my limited budget… I need to change my eating habit and lose weight, says weak will power …I need to be better at what I’m doing, says that sense of self-dissatisfaction… I need someone to give me a… Continue

Why Jesus? Part 3

Three Needs

As we said in Part 2 of this series, aloneness is the single most internal stress factor. Just ask anyone who has had a breakup, a lost job, an impending surgery, a visit to a dentist’s office, a call to go into battle or a dreaded confrontation with someone who has power to do you in. There is no question it is you and you alone that must go through the experience. Fear-laced anticipation forms and spews out all kinds of ominous imaginary… Continue

Why Jesus? Part 2

Why Jesus?

In order to really answer this question we have to look at the individual human condition. Three things standout about the human condition, aloneness, our perceived needs in that aloneness and how we deal with them. In this first column we’ll look at aloneness. The next two will deal with needs and how we meet them.

The human condition is one of being born into a growing awareness of self-conscious aloneness, the needs arising from that aloneness, and facing the… Continue

Bible Study, Maybe the Old Testament is not so old after all.

Psalm 79:1

“O God, the nations have invaded your inheritance; they have defiled your holy temple, they have reduced Jerusalem to rubble.”

The nations have invaded, defiled and reduced.

1.invaded your inheritance (the land)

2.defiled your holy temple (the heart)

3.reduced Jerusalem to rubble (the community of faith)

When we seek to understand what God is telling us in the Old Testament it is essential we read through the lens of spirituality… Continue

Hi Everyone

Prayer for the day.

It seems that everyone is dealing with some heavy stuff out there. The amazing thing is that of all the six and a half billion folks out there the Lord knows exactly what is going on in each life at every moment. Nothing escapes Him and nothing stands in the way of Him responding to our prayers for one another. To the ones that have called for special intercession on their behalf may we just pray together,

O Lord God, Heavenly Father, your heart is grieved for your… Continue
